VAT Registration

Should I register for VAT?

If your taxable turnover is reasonably expected to be less than £73,000 per annum, you do not have to register. Otherwise, assume you need to register as the VAT liability exists whether you register or not.

Some businesses choose to register, one of the reasons being able to claim back input VAT (ie VAT paid on purchased goods). Obviously, registering mandates that you add VAT to your bills. The payoff is whether your customers “care” about the VAT they are paying for your services. If they do not, then consider registering.

On the assumption that you are going to register, the second question to answer is whether you want to apply for the cash accounting scheme.
